Recently GoCodeGreen’s founder hosted a round table at the TechUK Tech & Net Zero conference in London. Here’s an extract from an article in Diginomica about the panel.
While organizations are working towards the transition to net zero, progress is not taking place quickly enough, believes sustainable IT expert, Eric Zie.
While hosting an attendee opinion-sharing session at TechUK’s Tech and Net Zero Conference last week, the Founder and Chief Executive of advisory firm GoCodeGreen, pointed out:
Things are starting to change, but not at the pace needed. No chance. It’s all not going to plan. We in digital tech are the problem solvers and if we can harness ourselves properly, we can make a real difference…[But] people need to be incentivized in the right way to act. They’re not going to do it via osmosis. We have to be more sophisticated than that. It’s not about wacking people over the head with regulation but introducing regulation in certain areas to protect and guide organizations in how to act and be mindful of the consequences. In that way, it filters down to the supply chain too.
His views would appear to be backed up by the findings of the UK Net Zero Census 2024, the findings of which were shared at the conference. The Census was produced by carbon reduction and net zero consultancy, Planet Mark, together with the UK Business Climate Hub portal for SMEs and the Broadway Initiative. The Initiative is a coalition of trade associations working with government to help the country achieve its environmental aims.
For starters, the report indicates that most sectors, including tech, will need to cut their carbon emissions by at least 90% before 2050 if the UK is to meet its mandated net zero targets.
Happily, nearly 73% of respondents believe net zero is a medium (30%), high (28%), or very high priority (15%) for their business strategy over the year ahead. An even heftier four out of five said they were prioritizing wider sustainability goals.
A key driver of such enthusiasm is a perceived positive impact on the organization’s reputation and public perception (90%). A further 88% expect to gain new customers as a result, while 85% anticipate regulatory compliance benefits.
